Moving to Providence - Things to Know, See and Do

Moving to Providence - Things to know, see and do

About Providence

Providence, the state capital of Rhode Island, was formerly a bastion of industry as well as organised crime. Providence's revitalisation has led to the installation of a number of parks and attractions and brought emphasis back to its historic roots. Downcity events, historic sites, districts such as College Hill and Federal Hill as well as a vibrant nightlife make Providence a worthwhile tourist destination.

Waterplace Park and Riverwalk, Roger Williams Park, Roger Williams National Memorial and Prospect Terrace Park are all located in Providence.

Providence is home to many historic buildings, while the East Side neighbourhood boasts the largest contiguous area of buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places in the U.S. The dome of the State House is the fourth-largest self-supporting marble dome in the world and the second-largest marble dome after St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. The Rhode Island School of Design Museum has the 20th-largest collection in the country, while the Providence Athenæum is the fourth oldest library in the country.

The southern part of the city is where you will find Nibbles Woodaway, the world's largest termite. Roger Williams Park houses a zoo, a botanical center and the Museum of Natural History and Planetarium.

The Providence Biltmore Hotel is a historic location built in 1922, which closed in 1974. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1977 and it reopened in 1979.
